I know how you feel.

I know exactly how you feel. I’ve been there too. You don’t believe me? Okay, read.

You’ve probably seen that quote where Billie Eilish once said that she ruined a lot of good things by being sad and you probably felt it like I did. I know that most people know you to be this cheerful extrovert or maybe, just maybe you’re quiet and you always seem so put together but what if it’s just a front and you know it? What if you just know how to mask your feelings because you don’t want to rub off on people negatively?

You have your bad days, those days when all you want to do is shut everyone out because you feel miserable or sad for one reason or another. People around you never believe that you’re depressed because they feel that it’s just not possible or maybe they just feel like you’re seeking attention. What they don’t know is that depression affects even the best of us. How else do you explain going from very happy to extremely sad in the space of one hour? Or how do you explain that your mind is always constructing different scenes to make you miserable?

I know that sometimes, you don’t even understand what’s going on with you. I know that people come to you and they’re like ”a problem shared is a problem half solved” but what if you don’t know what the problem is? What if you just want people to let you be?

I totally understand what you’re going through and you’re not alone. If you’re hoping for a solution, I don’t have one but I can share some stuff to help you anytime you feel down.

  • Talk to God about how you’re feeling. If you’re a believer, you know how much this helps because the Holy Spirit is always there to listen to you and help you feel better.
  • Do something you love to do. It makes you feel better. Anytime I feel down, I write. My journal has felt my pain more than anyone. Sometimes, the motivation to do what you love may not be there and that’s fine.
  • Try to think happy thoughts. If you want to stop thinking about negative stuff, you have to counter it with positivity. I’m not about to pretend that it’s a piece of cake but the keyword is ’try’.
  • Sleep is a form of escape but it doesn’t solve anything. When you wake up, it’s like starting again. Sad.
  • It is a passing phase. You have to believe that it will pass and it will be sunny again.
  • If you have to cry, cry. Sometimes, if you’re overwhelmed, crying is an outlet. Honestly, it’s better than keeping so many emotions bottled in.
  • Self-harm or suicide will never be a solution. Anytime you feel depressed, remember that there’s so much good in the world and you can be part of it. Always remember that someone loves you too.
  • Do not stop trying. Things may not be so good right now but you have to believe that it’ll only get better.

You may doubt it right now but the truth of the matter is that you’re stronger than you think and you’re going to overcome whatever it is you’re going through. Your sunny days are near and you just have to will yourself to believe it and you’ll be fine.

I’m rooting for you.

Love,

’Ruona ❤️

P.S:

I couldn’t publish last week and I’m so sorry.

Can you relate?

What do you do when you find yourself in depressing situations? What’s your coping mechanism?

Please leave something positive in the comment section to encourage someone. You don’t know who might need it. I can’t wait to read them.

  2. It”s okay as long as it’s a passing phase. You are only human. It becomes complicated when you dwell in that state and ‘choose’ not to get out of it. It’s a choice we often have to make. Nice piece Ruona!

  3. Hi, Ruona! Mental health is something I’m very passionate about and it’s my niche so this post warms my heart. Depression is something that can hit anyone at any time and I could definitely relate to this post and the tips you gave because I’ve been there and I’ve tried all of that. Positivity is what I preach and it’s no piece of cake to be positive but it’s something that’s worth trying like you said. Thank you for rooting for me. Thank you for posting this. We love to see it! ✨🔥❤️

  4. I am not an extrovert though but I feel depressed sometimes. Most times, I really can’t figure out what exactly is wrong with me but I know I never act normal. It takes me a long time to pull through but when I eventually do, I become really impressed with myself. I don’t have a coping mechanism, I seek solace in anything at the moment… (Shey you grab?)

I don’t know why each time I click on the reblog button on your post, it doesn’t work. I love this piece.

  5. nice piece beb. You scored big time with this one. My coping mechanism is my personal space . Sometimes I just need to zone out and recharge my energy and I’m back to my feet. Sometimes it’s harder than other times but i just have to keep trying. I think the best thing is to never give up because according to someone I know “na who give up fuck up”

  6. Good way out of that sad state. To add to no. 1 – Weeping may last for a night but joy comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5) Talk to God about your problems ‘cos HE gives joy. HE is the Prince of peace and wonderful counsellor that knows all things.

  7. You know, depression is a feeling that cannot be completely explained. You might try to put it in words but only those who have gone through it can relate.
I want to say thank you for this piece.
It offers a bit of consolation to know that one is not alone.
Coping mechanism can be destructive, ranging from hurting, shutting people out etc.
But in all we stand strong.
    Cheers!

    1. It’s so good to know that this could help.
Our coping mechanisms are not meant to destroy us but I agree with you; in all, we stand strong.
      Thank you for reading.

  8. Lovely write up, I could relate to it pretty well. We all have different mechanisms for handling depression. For me, i tell myself that whatever it is will come to pass. Sometimes music does it for me as well. Music on it’s own is medicine for the heart and food for the soul. Talking to God in one’s quiet time helps a lot too. More ink to your pen. Well-done,

  10. What I try to do when I feel down is think of someone who makes me happy. There is that special someone who brings a smile to your face no matter the situation. Use that as a beacon of light in your dark feeling. Stay blessed

  11. Of course I can relate. We all get such depressing feeling at one point or another in our various lives. It can be difficult to contain at times. One thing I know is at such times you don’t want to interact too much with anyone. Cos too much interaction may reveal how you truly feel. Like the saying goes, na talk dey bring talk. So you seem to say less and keep more to yourself. My remedy for such feelings is keeping to myself and praying to see the light at the end of the tunnel. playing games and surfing the internet for inspirational articles like this also helps me a lot. Thanks for this one. I love it.

  12. It’s just sad because people believe all extroverts are the happiest ones just because they always see them happy. Meanwhile, they all just try to cover their sadness with the positivity around them. If only people can just talk, talk to someone, talk to a friend that will listen to you, then the world will be a better place 🙂. Thank you for this piece uncle ❤️

    1. Hello, Ruona! Totally enjoyed reading this and I could relate to both the experience and the tips you share because “been there, done that”. Mental health is something that I’m very passionate about because it’s almost as important as living and I preach positivity so I can agree that it isn’t a piece of cake but it is definitely worth trying. Thank you for posting this and we love to see it ✨🔥

  14. Thanks baby, we all need a reminder that we’re enough and these feelings are only temporary, I was down yesterday, I told myself that happiness is work and it’s a choice and I decided to be happy, I turned on music, went to the bathroom, danced crazily as hell while bathing and that’s how I got by yesterday 😅

    1. You go, girl!!!
Being happy is a choice, really. In fact, we have choices to make in whatever we do. Only us can decide if we’re going to be down or if we’re going to get up.
Thanks for stopping by, Kind. 💜

    1. I like your coping mechanism. Not everyone is strong enough to avoid those things that overwhelm them. Some will prefer to dwell on them, thereby sinking deeper into their depressing states.
I like that you also do what you love.
      Thanks for sharing!

  15. This is a really beautiful piece, it’s a very common but uncommon problem among the young folks but hardly will you ever hear anyone talking about it until it’s too late.
    Thanks for this ❤️

    I luh you…

And please if you really do relate talk, talk to somebody please, somebody that would listen, somebody that will make you feel better at least. I hope and wish we all get to have someone like that in our lives.

And cow remember I got you.!

  16. My coping mechanism is writing, but as you said, sometimes we don’t feel like doing what we love.

I’ve tried keeping journals but it hasn’t worked out for far. I have too many books I’ve written in. Lord help me.

Maybe I should try keeping one again.

I love this piece. Thank you for this.
