You know, most things should not be taken at face value, especially the word ‘Love’. At one point in our lives, we’ve said the words ‘I love you.’ It is not saying it people! It is proving it. My friend once posted on Facebook; “until you have read 1 Corinthians 13, you should not say you are in love.” Another of my friends said “Love does not exist in Nigeria anymore.” I laughed at that. People have turned this word ‘Love’ to a caricature of what it is.
Love is being able to sacrifice your time. Love involves trust. It is being able to respect a person’s decision. It is being able to tell the truth, even if it hurts. Love involves prayer. It is patient, it is kind. It does not envy. Above all, love is God.
I recently attended the traditional wedding/engagement of my friend’s elder sister. My friends and I assisted in serving food and drinks to the guests. I was captivated by what I saw that day. You know that kind of wedding that makes you long for yours (Lol..I am allowed to daydream). I remembered the bride’s entrance. I almost dropped the tray I was carrying. She looked so beautiful and happy. I also remember her mother’s smile. It was the smile of a woman whose daughter had made her proud. There was love in her eyes. The groom must have been thinking ‘yeah, I am a lucky man.’ Oh, the father of the bride was proud alright. I could not take my eyes off the couple. You should have seen them talking.Their smiles and the general closeness literally made me cry. All I needed was one look to know that indeed, it was true love, one that had been ordained by God (so my friend, love still exists in Nigeria). Favour kept on saying “I’m getting married next” (Yeah, right). Everything was beautiful. Love itself is beautiful.
So, people. Love is not just a word. It involves your actions. Love will never lie to you. Love will always sacrifice. It is eternal. Love is not all about weddings though. Love is about family, friendship and bonds that will last for a lifetime ‘Love’ will never be those four letters. Love will always be beneath the surface.
